Desktop screenshots are PNGs from 1366 x 768 up to 3840 x 2160, in landscape or portrait, and up to 50 MB each. The first option keeps your image's own shape and only scales it when it's outside that range, so nothing is cropped or padded. Xbox screenshots need at least 1920 x 1080, and the 1920 x 1080 size also works for Xbox titled hero art and a trailer thumbnail. The guide to Microsoft Store screenshot sizes covers how many you can add, captions and what each image is for.
Fit or crop
When an image's shape doesn't match the size, Fit keeps the whole image and fills the space around it with the background color you pick. Crop fills the whole frame and trims the edges, keeping the center. Images that have to be scaled up are marked, since they can look soft. Start from a larger capture when you can.
Sizes come from Microsoft's App screenshots, images, and trailers page.
