Microsoft Store screenshot sizes and rules, in every language

The screenshot and image rules for an MSIX app on the Microsoft Store, and how to stop uploading the same screenshots once per language.

Here's what the Store accepts for most desktop apps.

  • Screenshots are PNG files, landscape or portrait, up to 50 MB each.
  • Desktop screenshots need at least 1366 x 768 and can go up to 4K (3840 x 2160).
  • You need one screenshot to submit. You can add up to 10 on desktop and up to 8 for each other device family.
  • Each screenshot can have a caption of up to 200 characters.
  • Partner Center wants the screenshots on every language's listing, even when they're the same images.

Screenshot sizes by device family

You can give each device family your app supports its own screenshots, and customers see the ones for the device they're on. Don't add screenshots for device families your app doesn't support.

Device familySizeHow many
Desktop1366 x 768 or larger, up to 4K (3840 x 2160)Up to 10
Xbox1920 x 1080 or larger, up to 4K (3840 x 2160)Up to 8
Holographic1268 x 720 or larger, up to 4K (3840 x 2160)Up to 8
Surface HubShows your desktop screenshotsNone of its own

Every screenshot has to be a PNG of 50 MB or less, in landscape or portrait. Only one screenshot is required across all device families, but Microsoft suggests at least four for each one you support, so people can see how the app looks on their device.

Captions, order and layout

  • Each screenshot can have a caption of up to 200 characters, and you write it for each language.
  • The Store shows screenshots in the order you put them in. You can drag them into a new order in Partner Center.
  • Keep important visuals and text in the top two thirds, because the Store can lay text over the bottom third.
  • Don't add extra logos, icons or marketing messages on top of your screenshots.
  • Avoid very light or very dark colors and high-contrast stripes, which can make the overlaid text hard to read.

Store logos and other images

Store logos and the other images are PNG files of up to 50 MB, like screenshots. For an app, the one that matters most is the 1:1 app tile icon. Most of the rest are for games or Xbox.

ImageSizeWhen you need it
1:1 app tile icon300 x 300Strongly recommended for apps. It wins over the icon in your package
2:3 poster art720 x 1080 or 1440 x 2160Main logo for games. Required on Xbox, with the title
1:1 box art1080 x 1080 or 2160 x 2160For games. Used as the logo if there's no poster art. Required on Xbox
16:9 super hero art1920 x 1080 or 3840 x 2160Recommended for everyone. No text, and games with trailers need it
Xbox branded key art584 x 800Xbox, with the title and a branding bar
Xbox titled hero art1920 x 1080Xbox, with the title
Xbox featured promotional square art1080 x 1080Xbox, without the title
2:1 holographic image2400 x 1200Only if your app supports Holographic

If you skip the app tile icon, the Store uses the image from your package. Run the Windows App Certification Kit before you submit to find any images your package is missing.

Trailers

You can add up to 15 trailers. Each one is an MP4 or MOV at 1920 x 1080, no larger than 2 GB, with a 1920 x 1080 PNG thumbnail and a title of up to 255 characters. Microsoft recommends keeping them to 60 seconds or less. Trailers show at the top of the listing on Windows 10 version 1607 and later, as long as the listing has 16:9 super hero art. Unlike screenshots, a trailer you've uploaded for one language can be picked again for another.

Screenshots in every language

In Partner Center, each language has its own Store listing page, and the screenshots live on that page. Microsoft's own docs say you need to upload images for each language separately, even if you're using the same images, and add the captions for each language. With eight languages, that's eight rounds of uploading the same files in the same order.

The usual way around it is Partner Center's CSV import and export, which Microsoft suggests when you have listings in a lot of languages. It works, but you're editing a wide spreadsheet, and nothing in the import is kept until every error in the file is fixed. If you're adding languages at the same time, the guide to translating your Store listing covers what each new language needs.

Using one set of screenshots with StoreFast

On StoreFast's Store listing page, you drop your PNGs in once, put them in order, and that set goes to every language in the listing. Each screenshot has its own caption field for each language, and Translate missing fills in captions that are empty in other languages. You can also change captions on the screenshots that are already live without uploading them again.

StoreFast checks each file as you add it. A screenshot has to be a PNG from 1366 x 768 up to 3840 x 2160 and at most 50 MB, a set holds up to 10, and captions can be up to 200 characters. These are the desktop rules, and StoreFast handles desktop screenshots. Your logos, trailers and other images stay as they are in Partner Center.

The new set replaces the live screenshots in every language when you send the listing, either on its own or with your next update. A language you add in StoreFast needs a new screenshot set, so the new language and the old ones end up with the same images.

Coding agents can do the same thing over MCP. upload_screenshot gives them an upload link for the PNGs, and set_screenshots sets the order and the captions in each language. The REST API has a PUT /apps/:appId/screenshots upload and takes the screenshot ids on the listing. For the text limits that go with the screenshots, see Microsoft Store listing limits.

Questions

What size should Microsoft Store screenshots be?
Desktop screenshots have to be PNG files of at least 1366 x 768, in landscape or portrait, and the Store takes them up to 4K (3840 x 2160). Each file can be up to 50 MB.
How many screenshots does a Microsoft Store listing need?
One screenshot in total is enough to submit. You can add up to 10 desktop screenshots and up to 8 for each other device family, and Microsoft suggests at least four for every device family your app supports.
Do I have to upload screenshots for every language in Partner Center?
Yes. Every language has its own Store listing page, and Microsoft says you need to upload images for each language separately, even when they're the same images. Trailers are the exception, since you can pick one you've already uploaded.
What size is the Store logo for a Microsoft Store app?
For apps, the 1:1 app tile icon is 300 x 300 pixels. It's optional but strongly recommended, and when you upload one the Store uses it instead of the icon in your package. The 2:3 poster art and 1:1 box art are for games.
Can StoreFast use the same screenshots in every language?
Yes. You upload one set of desktop screenshots, and StoreFast sends it to every language in the listing. Captions can still be different in each language.
